Brief Description of Duties:
Reporting to the SVP, Academic Affairs, the AVP is responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction of Academic Technology, Classroom Services, a developing Simulation Center, the Medical Research Library and development of educational analytics.
The AVP will work collaboratively with stakeholders from all academic educational areas, including but not limited to: College/School deans, residency directors, library staff and users, alumni, Continuing Medical Education (CME), and the research community to envision, plan, implement, and maintain the systems necessary to support top tier research and education programs, students, and faculty. This includes student information systems, classroom and course management systems, curriculum support, faculty teaching support, distance learning, simulation, Library and mobile applications.
POSITION ACTIVITIES: The AVP will perform a number of professional functions that include, but are not limited to:
Consults with and serves as a liaison with students, faculty, academic administration, and appropriate committees for assessing institutional educational technology needs and developing a well-coordinated vision for the Downstate community. Responsible for overall planning, development, implementation and support of information technologies and services to address the educational and research needs of the students, faculty, and staff and promotion of an appropriate and efficient electronic educational environment. In collaboration with IT, assist educational administrators and academic faculty with their technology needs in planning, program development and execution. These include, but are not limited to: Learning management system (LMS), curriculum mapping, evaluation and testing, and Classrooms of the Future. Actively oversees the educational technology services for external accreditation reviews of all colleges, and implements time-sensitive improvements to meet accreditation requirements. These endeavors will require ongoing collaboration and review by College/School deans, associate deans, program chairs, and other Downstate stakeholders. Collaborate with library leaders at other State University of New York (SUNY) institutions related to opportunities for shared growth in academic technology across campuses. Development of an annual capital and operational budgets for educational technology services as well as long-term financial plans for the ongoing upgrades and replacements of existing technologies. Reviews the financial impacts of improvements in education technology. Conducts ongoing technology assessment of technology supporting learning environments and education information systems and products. Synthesizes pertinent information and identifies implications for long-term planning and development of information services in support of academic programs and educational computing.
Stays abreast of current developments within the institution and its affiliates as well as within the industry and our supported vendors.
Promotes and maintains an environment conducive for professional growth and advocates for the projects which meet institutional business and strategic goals.
Plans for appropriate staffing levels, recruits high quality staff to meet those needs, and allocates effort across all projects and tasks.
Provides leadership, appropriate guidance, evaluation, feedback and mentoring of faculty, staff and students. Ensures team members perform assigned duties and fosters growth and high morale.

All successful candidates must undergo various background checks, maintain credentials required for continued employment and adhere to the SUNY-DMC UHB Principles of Behavior.   Clinical Faculty and Allied Health professionals must receive and maintain Medical Board authorization.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION: Terminal degree and/or equivalent senior level experience. Ten (10) years of progressive experience in Informatics, library science or a related field. Quality and levels of prior job functions may offset some of the 10 years of required experience. SKILLS & EXPERIENCE: Demonstrated record of innovation and success in providing technology services aligned with institutional goals, with extensive knowledge of academic technology management and leadership. Strong understanding of the foundations and processes of instructional technology (including instructional development), college teaching, faculty development, and distance education. Extensive knowledge of current information technology and applications. Knowledge of vendor RFP. Knowledge of grant writing/development is preferred. Demonstrated ability and interest to acquire external funds will be considered a strength. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. The AVP must be able to effectively communicate the capabilities and limitations of information technologies. Strong organizational skills. Demonstrated capabilities and experience in establishing policies and procedures, implementation and adherence. Experience and comfort with creating and presenting information to administrative leadership, faculty and at various external settings.
